Have you ever wondered what it’s like being a chiropractor? Starting with conducting numerous healing consultations with their patients that involve physically demanding adjustments, to running their multi-faceted, demanding practice. Daily. Not to forget, personal lives. It’s not uncommon for chiropractors and healthcare professionals in general, to feel like they carry the world on their shoulders. Feelings of stress and burnout are all too common. Is there then a way to maintain positive chiropractor health? A way to run a fulfilling practice while maintaining a healthy, harmonious balance between the mind, body and the business?

A Reality check, please

The purpose of a chiropractor is to heal painful conditions with a few cracks and adjustments. But it’s no bed of roses. Primarily, it is physically taxing. Did you know that on average, a chiropractor may consult 30 to 50 patients a day! Standing for long periods, repetitive movements, handling heavy equipment and patients of all shapes and sizes while often in unhealthy postures contribute to frequent work-related injuries, negatively impacting chiropractor health.

Also, being good at what you do as a healthcare practitioner comes with its own unfortunate cost. Patients will only want to be treated by you and you end up feeling imprisoned by your own practice. That precious vacation time that was supposed to help overcoming stress gets indefinitely sidelined. Not taking breaks when required can lead to burnout. Mentally and emotionally. Talented chiropractors get so focused on treating others that they completely ignore their own needs, persisting in their ways without dealing with burnout, not seeking help and support from anyone. They sadly stagnate without continuous learning and upskilling. In addition, chiropractic reimbursements are pretty low due to the intense competition in the market and people not taking chiropractors seriously. Gifted healers recede into becoming sad depressed beings replesent with physical and mental issues, who resent what they do. All in all, this paints a pretty grim, unhappy picture of the lives of most healthcare practitioners out there today.

Having detailed above, the realities that chiropractors and healthcare practitioners face, and how it adversely affects their wellness, there is a silver lining here.

The Silver Lining

There is a way in which chiropractor health can be transformed and maintained. A way in which the practitioner becomes more mindful , grounded, focused, and overall a happier being and a better doctor. 

It all starts within. It is crucial to develop a winning mindset. Despite the stress being all around, an emotionally stable mind can cope with it all. A few healthy practices to build such a mindset include:

  1.  Quiet time – Set aside an hour or so each day to disconnect from everything else. No work, no phones, no distractions. Find a place devoid of disturbances and do whatever brings peace such as yoga, prayer or meditation. 
  2. Proper Sleep – Adequate sleeping hours goes a long way in helping overcoming stress. Better sleep equates to a calmer,healthier mind that is productive and less prone to agitation. 
  3. Gratitude Journaling – It is impossible to be grateful and unhappy at the same time. This rings so true. A truly transformative practice is the simple listing of a few things each day that we are grateful for. Additionally, include positive affirmations such as “ I am a successful doctor whose mission is to treat and heal my patients with care and love”
  4. Limit screen time – It’s been proven that excess time spent in front of computer screens or on phones contributes to increased feelings of anxiety and depression. Try taking time off from screens, spend time instead outdoors.
  5. Happiness activities – Finally, do what makes you truly madly happy! Doing so sends positive signals to our minds. It could be walks in nature, socializing, playing an instrument or quality time with the family. It all counts and it all matters very much. 
  6. Eat Better, Drink More – It’s understated that you need to pay close attention to what you put into your body. A lot of problems stem from the simple fact that we are simply dehydrated ! Cultivating a habit to stay hydrated can be very beneficial. Similarly, the food consumed has a real effect on how you feel. Consuming fresh fruits and vegetables often, eating a variety of foods and practicing eating mindfully and slowly can help support health.
